Very rarely do we see a film produced on very low budget and starring almost unknown actors making a mark. Even then, there comes a time once in a blue moon when something surprises us. With Overtime, unfortunately the more prevalent truth prevails.
Overtime album is a dampener. First, it features only 3 songs. Now, whether or not you use five or six songs in the film is not exactly relevant but a music album cannot do with just 3 songs, more so when the music composer and lyricist are both new along with a few singers.
‘Chhamiyya Chhamiya’ is another item number on the racks but unlike the favorites, this one does not make any impact whatsoever. At a time when Hunter and Imported Kamariya are making all the news, ‘Chhamiyya Chhamiya’ would be lost even before the film’s release. Sahil Rayyan comes up with a very average composition and Arafat Mehmood’s lyrics hardly have any punch. Considering that Overtime is a debut deck for both, one certainly should have expected them to try harder. Ritu Pathak and Dhaa Joshi’s singing do not make much of a difference. There is a deliberate attempt to experiment as well or perhaps give a conventional song a modern facelift but that certainly did not work.
‘Shahar Mumbai Hai’ is another let down. Swaroop sings this one along with Aniket and we also see the music director Sahil donning the singer’s hat. Whether or not the song ‘Shahar Mumbai Hai’ would be properly used in the film simply does not matter when the lyrics and the renditions fail to grab any attention. The lyrics are bland and the composition is lackluster. We have seen numerous memorable numbers on Mumbai and this one does not quality even for the contention.
‘Tuhi Awaz Hai Meri’ is another average number. The third, and also the last song, does not salvage the album at all. If it’s any consolation, the song has been sung by Javed Ali and his fans may take a liking. Even then, Javed Ali is a far better singer and his talent could have been better used had the song’s melody and the arrangement been a tad better. I would like to say that this one is still passable but considering the overall efforts and the experience with the music of Overtime, the album is a total failure with nothing to root for.
