Hate Story Music Review

Hate Story has certainly been creating a lot of buzz all around, thanks to the explosive dialogues, the bold scenes or the tussle with the censor board. Vishesh Films, Vikram Bhatt and actually the entire Bhatt camp have always been different and whether you like them or hate them, you cannot avoid them. They have given us some of the best that Bollywood has churned out and when it comes to music of a film from this production house, we are always waiting since they are one of the best in film music.

Regretfully, Hate Story would disappoint you with the three songs they have lined up. There are 6 songs in total, but 3 are alternate versions of their counterparts. For all the hype that Hate Story has generated, the album may act as a dampener and perhaps the filmmakers would have to pull off some promotional stints to get going.

‘Mahe Jaan’ goes somewhat like ‘Chehra Tera Dil Mein Mahe Jaan’, aimed to be a romantic number fails to impress. If you happen to watch the video, the song would be a disaster coupled with the expressions of the pair in question. Especially, Paoli Dam and the sets in the song are a nightmare for any romantic song. Whatever good there was in the music (Harshit Saxena), lyrics (Kumaar) and the singer (Harshit himself) is completely wasted in the entire arrangement. ‘Mahe Jaan’ is an average Bollywood contemporary number which would be long forgotten before the track runs through its play time.

‘Dil Kanch Sa’ which has been sung by Krishna has a slow start and is high on the notes and pitch. It goes the Sufi way a bit then comes back with guitars and when you thought there is not much left to unravel, the entire arrangement goes on to an orchestral level and surprises you. ‘Dil Kanch Sa’ does not have an associated video yet and thankfully else perhaps it would have been a spoilsport. Although this one is much better than ‘Mahe Jaan’ from all aspects, yet Harshit has not managed to weave the magic with his music as he did with his rendition of Haal E Dil from Murder 2!

The best one has been kept for the last. ‘Raat’ is a good composition and Sunidhi Chauhan is at her ethereal best. That husky tone going through with all the highs and lows is a treat any given day. Raat unravels very nicely until you suddenly find Sunidhi giving into English wordings that have been juxtaposed with the otherwise quintessential Bollywood number. You see some techno coming in and then the English lyrics make way for distortions that certainly do not suit the song that had been built up so well from the beginning. Sunidhi does a great job and there is no two ways about it.

Hate Story music album is not going to be a buy unfortunately. Unless the Bhatt camp does any good with this film, it seems set to tank like Blood Money or worse although the latter had a bit better music and a better cast and the former does not seem to have either. Paoli Dam was perhaps the ideal choice who tried to do what Bipasha did a decade back but alas, she just cannot match up to the original Bong beauty’s screen presence.
