Shanghai Preview

Dibakar Banerjee is back after his path breaking debut film Love Sex Aur Dhokha and his subsequent Oye Lucky Lucky Oye which received an amazing critical reception and had been highly praised by lovers of world cinema. The talented Bengali filmmaker had been in the news for his highly anticipated Shanghai which after a long wait has finally got its first trailer released.

Shanghai is an official adaptation of a political thriller ‘Z’, a novel written by Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos which had been made into a film in French in 1969 as Z by Costa Gavras. Dibakar’s Shanghai stars the versatile actors Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and talented Kali Koechlin in central roles. Prosenjit Chatterjee, the most sought after star in the Bengali Film Industry plays an integral cameo.

The novel Z tracks the times of military ruled Greece and the story of how a prominent politician of the opposition party is assassinated right in front gleaming eye witnesses but justice is not delivered appropriately, ever. Prosenjit Chatterjee’s character is the politician who is against exploitation of common man, wants every policy of the government to be that of holistic development instead of capitalism and favorable to a handful of bureaucrats and influential businessmen. When he is murdered, there is an enquiry commission initiated by the Chief Minister of Bharat Nagar (the town where the story of Shanghai is set). Abhay Deol plays the role of the administrative investigator while Kalki plays a staunch supporter of the assassinated idealist politician. Emraan Khan is a small town part time crook and part time good man who decides to help in the investigation to seek the truth and contribute to the greater good of his community.

Things get murkier, the assassination is termed as a drunk driving and hit and run case which has no political affiliation or vendetta. Eye witnesses change their testaments, key links to solve the case vanish miraculously over time and random deaths plague the small town that is all set to get industrialized. Abhay Deol plays a suave and conniving bureaucrat, he is calm and he is the system. Kalki and Emraan strive to get to the bottom of the case however justice may be the most unrealistic dream that the small town residents and the outsider Kalki can think of. Amidst riots, political complexities and larger conspiracies, Shanghai gives voice to the oppressed.

The trailer of Shanghai has created a huge amount of interest already with its clever and thought provoking captions and Dibakar’s intriguing direction that is prevalent from the promo itself.

Produced by PVR Pictures, Dibakar Banerjee directed Shanghai also stars Farooq Sheikh, Pitobash Tripathy, Supriya Pathak and Anant Jog in supporting roles. The editor of the film is Namrata Rao of Kahaani fame, the DoP is Nikos Andritsakis and the music director duo Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani (Vishal-Shekhar) have composed the music of the film. The background score has been composed by Michael McCarthy and the sound engineer is Pritam Das.

If you have not caught Abhay Deol in suits and as an influential man, Emraan Hashmi with rugged clothes, shady profession yet a pure heart and the pseudo dream of an Indian city becoming Shanghai, then get set for the experience of witnessing our cities becoming Shanghai this June.
