Gattu Preview

Gattu has been creating a lot of hype, albeit not for the mainstream Bollywood audience but certainly among those who love independent films and unique stories with an essence. Having graced the Berlin Film Festival, Gattu is all set to storm several international film festivals including the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, Toronto International Film Festival and Asia Pacific Screen Awards among others.

Rajan Khosa (Director) is an excited man and so is Nandita Das, the chairperson of Children’s Film Society of India who is the producer and presenter of the film.

Gattu is an orphan who doesn’t head to school or anything that a boy of his age would be doing. His only dream is to be the numero uno kite flyer in his community. Although he is a natural in kite flying, there is a hurdle that he needs to overcome in order to claim his victory. ‘Kali’ is an undefeated kite in the neighborhood that has even shattered Gattu’s dreams on numerous occasions. Being a dreamer that he is, Gattu is willing to go to any extent to win over ‘Kali’ and he would leave no stone unturned until he does so. From the narrow lanes of Roorkee to the clear skies filled with kites, from the innocent eyes of the kids in the community to Gattu’s innocent yet firm, dreamy and determined appearance, the film is set to be one of a kind experience.

Visually, Gattu appears to be promising and so is Samad Mohammad (the young boy who plays Gattu). Written by Rajan Khosa, Satyam, Dilip Shukla and Ankur Tewari and Directed by Rajan Khosa, ‘Gattu’ has been edited by Antara Lahiri while Satya Nagpaul is the DoP. The film’s music has been composed by Sandesh Sandilya and the supporting cast includes Jayanta Das, Harshit, Mohit, Naveen, Ritika and others.

Gattu appears to be humorous, punched in with phenomenal performances by the child artistes and appears to have an impressive background score. The kite flying sequences in the trailer are certainly impressive and all the accolades should be able to grab some eyeballs prior to its release. With an innovative storytelling and unique plot, whether Gattu would make a mark commercially or not can only be adjudged post its release. For now, one can enjoy the trailer and bask in the glory of the achievements this independent film has brought about after the revival of the Children’s Film Society of India.
